HCAD protest deadlines and hearing timeline

A practical sequence for filing with Harris County Appraisal District, submitting evidence, attending the ARB hearing, and understanding later review deadlines.

Your notice controls. Confirm every date with HCAD; late-delivered or corrected notices can change the filing deadline.
  1. January 1, 2027

    Valuation date

HCAD values the property as it existed on this date.

  2. Spring 2027

    Notice arrives

Review the HCAD value, property details, exemptions, delivery date, and printed deadline.

  3. Monday, May 17, 2027

    Standard filing deadline

May 15 falls on Saturday in 2027. File by the next business day, or 30 days after delivery of your notice—whichever is later. Your notice controls.

  4. After filing

    Confirmation and evidence

Save the HCAD confirmation number. Upload clearly labeled evidence through the official portal or follow your hearing notice.

  5. May–August

    Informal review and ARB hearing

There is no single court date. HCAD assigns the hearing date and generally provides at least 15 days' notice. An informal settlement may happen first.

  6. After the hearing

    Written ARB order

Keep the written order and its delivery date because later deadlines run from that date.

  7. Usually within 60 days of the order

    Further review or district court

Eligible owners may pursue binding arbitration, SOAH review, or district court. The order and Texas law control the deadline.
